This weekend a new lectern at Ruddington’s War Memorial to remember those from our village who died serving their country is being unveiled and dedicated.
It is a “Roll of Honour” to those who fell during the First and Second World Wars and in Korea. The new board was decided upon because the names carved on the War Memorial itself are still difficult to read despite the restoration work that was carried out in 2013. However it was decided to retain an older lectern nearby since it acknowledges Nottinghamshire County Council’s financial contribution to the 100th Anniversary Garden.
The £1,297.50 price tag of the new memorial board was partly funded by grants from Nottinghamshire County Council and Rushcliffe Borough Council’s Community Fund, with the remaining cost of of £547.50 being met by Ruddington Parish Council from its reserves.
Saturday’s Armistice Day ceremony will start at 10:45am, when the President of the Ruddington Branch of the Royal British Legion, Ken Hicks, will unveil the lectern. Our Methodist and Baptist Ministers, Simon Rose and Sam Hackett, will then conduct a short Dedication Ceremony before the usual two minute silence at 11am and the playing of The Last Post by the Army Cadets’ bugler.
Then, this Sunday, 12th November, the uniformed groups in the village parade from The Green to the War Memorial, led by the Boys Brigade Band. A short service is held at the War Memorial, which is followed by a full service at St Peter’s Church.
Everyone is welcome.
